In 2010, a former Smith Barney financial advisor admitted to making an unauthorized $3.25 million transfer from a client’s account into an offshore bank account. He falsified documents to trigger the transfer and lied to the client about where the money was sent in order to cover up the fraud.
The previous year, in 2009, Smith Barney agreed to reimburse mostly elderly clients who had more than $800,000 bilked from their accounts by a Smith Barney employee who forged signatures to transfer funds from customer accounts.
